Population in Southern Colonies




The population in the early southern colonies was low but once we passed the 1650s the population increased dramatically. The population was mostly Africans that worked on indigo and tobacco farms, also there were more woman then men.

Africans and Slaves

- Williamsburg population 2,000 half were African (2)

- 1750 African population made up most of the population (2)

- Enslaved population more than free population (1)

Immigrants

- Most immigrants that moved into the southern colonies were poor, young men that worked as indentured servants (3)

- As the immigrant population increased the native population decreased (3)

- After 1630 there were 110,000 immigrants in 7 decades 69,000 were white (5)

Death in the Southern Colonies

- 1622 and 1644 Indians killed hundreds of colonists (5)

- Lots of mosquitoes caused malaria and killed men (2)

- Early 1600’s death rate high from diseases and tough living (5)

- If you were in poverty you weren’t allowed to vote also if you didn't own land you were not allowed to vote. (5)
